Green solutions for coffee capsules: PHA&PLA

Apr 11 , 2024

Since the Swiss Nestlé sub-brand Nespresso first sold coffee capsules in 1986, more and more people have believed that coffee capsules pose a huge threat to the environment, and various criticisms have continued to this day.

Coffee capsules are not easy to recycle because they are usually made from a mixture of plastic and aluminum, and there are often residues of coffee powder at the bottom of the capsules, making them difficult to recycle at ordinary municipal recycling plants.

Driven by the global need to end plastic pollution, using biodegradable materials to make coffee capsules has become a necessary innovative application. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Management Regulation (PPWR) adopted by the European Commission in November 2022 requires that fruit and vegetable stickers, tea bags and filter coffee capsules, as well as very light plastic bags, must be made of biodegradable plastic.

Combined with practical applications, PHA and PLA are currently mainly used for substitution.

At GOODBIOPAK, we take pride in offering sustainable solutions for coffee lovers everywhere, which is why we're excited to introduce our biodegradable coffee capsules.
